JD School of Design Hosts BLUM Module Installation Workshop- Bringing Together Design and Function

Learning at JD School of Design doesn’t end in the classroom — it continues to practical application that allows students to bridge creativity and pragmatism. Carrying forward its mission to build well-rounded, industry-ready professionals, JD School of Design recently organised an exclusive Module Installation Workshop in association with BLUM, a global frontrunner in functional fittings and systems for furniture and construction.
The workshop was organised to put students directly in front of the new technologies that are revolutionising interior and furniture design. With live demonstrations, interactive exercises, and hands-on practice under the guidance of professionals, students got to see firsthand how even the most minute hardware elements — hinges, drawers, and lifts — could completely revolutionise not only the use of a space but its look and usability as well.
The workshop began with a compelling presentation on BLUM’s history and design philosophy. For 70+ years, BLUM has pioneered furniture hardware innovation, setting global standards in precision engineering, ergonomics, and durability. Their motto — “Perfecting motion” — resonates with the JD School of Design’s vision of blending design thinking and technical expertise.
They explored the underlying principles on which modular furniture functions, how components like hinge systems, drawer runners, and lift mechanisms are constructed to function together to improve the furniture to be more comfortable, convenient, and space-saving. It was not so much a matter of putting parts together; it was about learning to understand the science and design intelligence that allows domestic furniture to work.
Hands-on experience with current tools
One of the highlights of the workshop was the hands-on demonstration, where BLUM experts took students through actual installation procedures. Students had a hands-on experience with professional modules, playing around with hinge adjustment, drawer balancing, and lift mechanism installation.
For most students, it was their first personal experience working with industry-standard equipment and technology. The feel of working with pieces and gaining the skills to troubleshoot minor installation issues taught them valuable lessons in precision, accuracy, and ergonomics — three legs of good furniture design.
JD School of Design emphasises such hands-on learning activities as a critical part of building future-ready designers. As much as classroom presentations enable students to throw around ideas, workshops such as this enable them to realise those ideas with technical competence and professional confidence.
Understanding Global Standards
BLUM presented students with international standards of quality as well as product innovations governing modern interior spaces. From motion technologies and soft-close mechanisms to ergonomic lift systems, students learned how design can be perfected by engineering excellence.
By speaking to BLUM professionals directly, students could ask hands-on questions about materials, installation problems, and design decisions that impact the end user. This face-to-face contact identified a key industry reality — design is not an aesthetic consideration only; it is also a functionality and durability consideration.
Building Industry Exposure and Confidence
For JD School of Design, collaborations with industry leaders like BLUM form a part of the learning process. These experiences expose students to creative practices, live problem-solving, and industry norms, which place them competitively as they enter professional settings.
Students left the workshop with more than technical expertise — they left with a new sense of purpose and curiosity. They learned how innovation happens at the intersection of design, technology, and usability and how interior designers sit at the core of driving experience within a space.
A Step Toward Future-Ready Designers
The BLUM Module Installation Workshop was not just a training course but an advance preview of the evolving future of the interior and furniture design universe. It reaffirmed JD School of Design’s commitment to holistic education — one that trains students to think, design, and build independently.
With such programs, JD School of Design continues to create a new crop of designers who value functionality as much as form. Whether a smooth glide of a drawer or a silent lift of a cabinet door, students learned that great design is in the details — and proficiency only comes through practice.
As the session concluded, all that was left was a shared feeling of wonder — about learning, about innovation, and about the endless possibilities that lie in store when design and craftsmanship converge.
At JD School of Design, each workshop brings us closer to creating designers who not only dream up spaces — they create experiences.
