Justice Beyond the Courtroom: Harita Mehta on Leadership, Gender Equality, and Driving Inclusive Social Change

In an exclusive interview with Harita Mehta, Senior Advocate, High Court & Supreme Court, the distinguished legal professional shares insights from her journey as an advocate, activist, and community leader.

Reflecting on the values of integrity, empathy, and perseverance that have shaped her career, Mehta discusses the importance of collective action in addressing societal challenges, the need for legal literacy and empowerment, and the critical steps India must take to advance gender equality and social inclusion.

Her perspectives underscore a leadership philosophy rooted in service, collaboration, and creating meaningful, lasting impact beyond the courtroom.

1. You have successfully balanced roles as a legal professional, activist, and community leader. What leadership principles have guided your journey?

The principles that have guided my journey are integrity, empathy, and perseverance. Whether working in the courtroom or within communities, I have always believed that leadership is about service and impact. It is important to listen, understand diverse perspectives, and remain committed to creating meaningful change. I have learned that leadership is not about authority but about empowering others and building trust through consistent action.

2. Your work emphasizes collaboration among NGOs, citizens, and institutions. Why is collective action essential for creating lasting social change?

No single institution or individual can address complex social challenges alone. Sustainable change happens when governments, civil society organizations, legal professionals, and citizens work together toward a common goal. Collaboration brings together diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives, enabling solutions that are more inclusive, effective, and long-lasting. Collective action also helps build stronger communities and greater public participation.

3. What has been the most challenging moment in your advocacy journey, and how did it shape your approach to leadership?

One of the most challenging aspects of advocacy is overcoming deeply rooted social barriers and resistance to change. There are times when progress seems slow despite sustained efforts. These experiences have taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of remaining focused on long-term impact. They have reinforced my belief that meaningful change requires persistence, dialogue, and continuous engagement with stakeholders.

4. Looking ahead, what are the key areas where India must focus to achieve greater gender equality and social inclusion?

India must prioritize access to quality education, economic empowerment, legal awareness, healthcare, and equal opportunities for women and marginalized communities. We must also address social attitudes that perpetuate discrimination and exclusion. Creating safe spaces, strengthening institutional support systems, and encouraging greater representation in leadership positions will be critical to building a more inclusive society.

5. If you could implement one transformative initiative at a national level to empower women and underserved communities, what would it be and why?

I would advocate for a nationwide legal literacy and empowerment mission that combines legal awareness, digital education, financial literacy, and access to support services. Many individuals remain unaware of their rights and available remedies. Equipping people with knowledge and resources would not only help them navigate challenges more effectively but also enable them to become active participants in their own social and economic progress.

These responses position Harita as a thoughtful leader, advocate, and change-maker while maintaining a professional and inspiring tone suitable for an entrepreneurial publication.
